In what is a complete update, Transfermarkt has adjusted the market values of over 600 footballers playing in the Championship. The biggest winners are a number of players in the ranks of the two clubs that finished at the top of the table. Those players include Josh Brownhill and Jordan Beyer of league winners Burnley, as well as Iliman Ndiaye and Anel Ahmedhodzic of second-placed Sheffield United. Those stars see their market values increase by several million. Others like Taylor Harwood-Bellis (on loan at Burnley from Man City), Nathan Tella (on loan at Burnley from Southampton), Amad Diallo (on loan at Sunderland from Man United), and Cesare Casadei (on loan at Reading from Chelsea), who already returned to their parent clubs in the Premier League, League One and Premier League 2 after successful loan spells in the second tier, were updated as well.

All new Championship market values at a glance

Sitting comfortably at the top of the final table with a 21-point advantage on third-placed Luton Town, Burnley managed to return to the Premier League after just one season. One of the best midfielders in the English second tier this season, Brownhill has scored seven goals and provided eight assists in 41 games and increases his market value by another €3 million to €18m. Teammates Beyer (+€6m to €16m), whose loan from German side Borussia Mönchengladbach will become a permanent move for a fee of €15m in July, and Harwood-Bellis (+€5m to €20m) have been very strong at the back for the Clarets, while Tella has been used in a number of different positions in attack and is the team’s top scorer with 17 goals in the league. The 23-year-old rises from €12m to €18m.

At Sheffield United, defender Ahmedhodzic, who has been signed for a fee of just €4.5m from Malmö FF last summer, continued to impress in defence and rises by another €4m to €20m, making him the joint-most valuable centre-back in the league alongside Harwood-Bellis after the update. The 23-year-old has played himself into the spotlight of bigger clubs but could also remain at Bramall Lane following promotion to the top flight. Teammate Ndiaye, who was valued at just €1.5m at the start of the season, already improved his market value significantly in December and March and now makes another jump of €3m to €18m following 25 goal contributions in 46 Championship appearances.

Championship market values:  Brighton signing Pedro extends lead

Further winners include Diallo (+€5m to €18m) of playoff team Sunderland, who wants to take his chance at Man United next season, and Casadei (+€6m to €12m), who currently impresses at the U20 World Cup and has returned to Chelsea after a strong second half of the season for Reading. The Championship's top scorer, Chuba Akpom, found the back of the net 28 times in 38 league games and improves his market value to a career-high €12m. The 27-year-old former Arsenal player is linked with a move to the Premier League, just like second-placed Viktor Gyökeres (+€5m to €13m), who scored 21 goals in 46 appearances for Coventry in the regular season, and third-placed Carlton Morris (20 goals in 44 games), who rises from €2.8m to €6m after helping Luton Town to win promotion to the top flight. As of now, the Hatters will start the season with a squad value of under €40m and face a huge task to survive in the Premier League.

Following rumours linking him with moves to bigger clubs last summer, Watford's João Pedro finally completed a switch to Brighton, which saw the Seagulls pay a club-record fee of €34.2m. As a result, the 21-year-old Brazilian receives another plus of €8m and is now worth €32m, extending his lead at the top of the Championship’s market value rankings ahead of teammate Ismaïla Sarr (remains at €20m), Burnley’s Harwood-Bellis, Sheffield United’s Ahmedhodzic and Sander Berge (+2m to €20) and Bristol City midfielder Alex Scott (+€6m to €20m).

Scott has established himself as one of the Championship’s brightest talents and impresses with his excellent work rate, intelligent ball-carrying and decision making under pressure. The 19-year-old U20 international has recently been linked with boyhood club Tottenham, Wolves and Manchester United.

Championship update: Arsenal loanees among winners - Delap downgraded

Other notable players upgraded in course of the complete update are Sunderland’s Jack Clarke (+€4m to €12m), who has attracted the attention of Premier League clubs as well and finally made his breakthrough, Burnley keeper Arijanet Muric (+€6m to €12m) and Arsenal loanees Charlie Patino (+€4m to €12m) and Auston Trusty (+€1m to €10m), who impressed at loan spells at Blackpool and Birmingham City respectively. The former is set to leave the Gunners permanently in the summer. Following his January move from MLS side Montréal to Watford for a fee of €8m, Ismaël Koné has started 13 of 20 games and quickly adapted to the Championship. The 20-year-old rises by €4m to €10m, now making him the third most valuable Canadian.

Among the downgraded players are Man City’s Liam Delap (-€2m to €5m), who struggled during loan spells at Stoke and PrestonNorwich striker Teemu Pukki (-€1m to €1.5m) and Christian Kabasele (-€0.8m to €1m) of Watford. The latter are two of a number of age-related downgrades in the Championship.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
