There have been plenty of speculations about Giovanni Reyna in recent weeks. Speculations that will hit another level after the Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder left his agency, Wasserman, and then officially joined Jorge Mendes’ agency Gestifute, earlier this week. Rumors that the US men’s national team attacking midfielder could leave Wasserman and join a new agency to help with a potential move away from Dortmund have been circulating for weeks but were not officially confirmed until January 10, with the agent change now officially noted on Transfermarkt.

Within 48 hours of the agent switch being announced, Reyna was then linked with a potential transfer to LaLiga side Real Sociedad. According to a report by Spanish outlet Noticias de Gipuzkoa, Real Sociedad are interested in signing Reyna on loan with an option to buy. Real Sociedad would like to add Reyna after the club sold depth player Mohamed-Ali Cho to OGC Nice for €10m earlier in the transfer window. Transfermarkt understands that Real Sociedad's interest is real and the LaLiga club are unlikely to be the only club wanting the 21-year-old attacking midfielder. Real Sociedad are, however, on the verge of signing Sheraldo Becker from Union Berlin as a potential Cho replacement

Real Sociedad also have a history of dealing with failed Borussia Dortmund projects. The club has previously signed Mikel Merino (for €7m in 2018) and Alexander Isak (for €15m in 2019). Merino was originally sold by Dortmund to Newcastle before joining Real Sociedad and has since developed into a key player for the San Sebastian-based club, increasing his market value to €50m. Isak, in the meantime, took LaLiga by storm, scoring 44 goals in 132 games across all competitions and was then sold with a massive profit for €70m to Newcastle in 2022, where he has continued his positive development, becoming a star striker in the Premier League.

Reyna wants to leave Dortmund - Nottingham Forest and Wolves in the mix?

Merino’s and Isak’s development have not been lost on Borussia Dortmund’s management, who still believe that Reyna could be a valuable asset. Indeed, the Black and Yellows feel that they have gone above and beyond to protect Reyna through difficult times with the national team and now want the American to step up his performances. With all that in mind, there might be some reluctance to allow Reyna to leave, especially without having control over the player’s future.

In the meantime, the Reyna family has a sense that change might be needed. Although Reyna is now represented by Gestifute, sources have explained to Transfermarkt that initial talks with Dortmund and the club’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, will not be managed by Mendes directly but instead by Gio’s father, Claudio Reyna. Mendes, in the meantime, appears to have been busy offering Reyna to several clubs in Europe. According to a report by ESPN, Mendes has offered Reyna to Olympique Marseille, AS Monaco, Olympique LyonSevillaVillarreal, as mentioned Real Sociedad and Benfica. Also in the mix are Premier League sides Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers where Mendes has close ties.

One thing is for certain: the Reyna camp is unhappy with the amount of playing time the 21-year-old has received this season. Reyna has managed 319 minutes in 11 games across all competitions. The lack of playing time is indeed concerning, as is the fact that head coach Edin Terzic doesn’t seem to trust Reyna to provide attacking impulses from the start. On top of that, in the past, the attacking midfielder has had the ability to be an impact sub, the body language has been lacking whenever Reyna did come on this season. Finally, with Dortmund adding Jadon Sancho on loan this January, the writing on the wall might indeed indicate the need for change for all parties involved.
