Man City eliminate Real - Ronaldo brace not enough for Juve
Manchester City have eliminated Real Madrid from the UEFA Champions League. The Citizens beat Los Blancos 2-1 thanks to two mistakes by Raphaël Varane and will now travel to Lisbon to play in the Champions League knockout stage tournament.
Five months ago, Man City had won the first-leg 2-1 at the Bernabéu, but even with a comfortable two away goal cushion, the Citizens pressed from the start. It was a tactic that worked well, and in the 9th minute, Raheem Sterling forced the first goal. Varane received a ball from keeper Thibaut Courtois, but Gabriel Jesus managed to steal the ball from him spotted Raheem Sterling, the striker then scored from a short distance.
Real Madrid continued to struggle with the extremely high press, but as the game continued, managed to gain more ground and create some chances. Finally, in the 28th minute, Los Blancos managed to score the equalizer. Karim Benzema spotted Rodrygo on the right, the winger then played the ball in the box where Benzema had found room to score with a header.
The Citizens, however, were unfazed by the new situation and continued to press high. Real Madrid, in the meantime, seemed faulty in the back throughout the 90 minutes, and Varane, in particular, struggled without the suspended Sergio Ramos. In the 68th minute, the French defender gave away the second goal. The defender tried to head back a ball to his keeper, but Gabriel Jesus jumped on the loose ball and then tapped the ball passed the keeper.
Olympique Lyon see off Juve - Now face Manchester City
That goal sealed it for City, who have now advanced to the quarterfinals where they will now face Olympique Lyon, who managed to see off Juventus in the second round of 16 second-leg clash that took place on Friday night. OL won the first leg five months ago 1-0, and despite a brace by Cristiano Ronaldo advanced.
Olympique Lyon laid the path to their first quarterfinal appearance since 2010 in the 12th minute in what was a controversial moment, however. Federico Bernardeschi had brought down Houssem Aouar. But even though Bernardeschi had played the ball referee Felix Zwayer did not overturn his decision. Dortmund target Memphis Depay stepped up and scored with a Panenka.
In the 43rd minute, Depay was also involved in the next goal. The Dutchman played the ball with his hand in the box. Zwayer again pointed to the spot, and Cristiano Ronaldo buried the ball. The Portuguese striker then scored his second goal in the 60th minute with a shot from a distance. The goal, however, was not enough, Juve needed one more to advance but were unable to get passed a well organized Lyon defense.
